Sherlock

Uncharted Television Facts - Sherlock

Hi there Holmies, Sherlockians, Sherlites, Cumberbabes, and everything in between - this one is for you! Sherlock is that one character that was brought to life by Doyle almost one and a half centuries back, and is still a big hit in our era. That’s how much we love our favourite high-functioning sociopath.

And when we talk about the Holmes franchise, a majority would agree that BBC’s adaptation of the 21st century Sherlock is one of the most loved Sherlock(s) of all times (trust me, I’ve done my research).

The wait for each season is maddening, and while the perfectionist episodes are created, addictive fans get into their mind palaces and come out with all sorts of insane but credible fan theories that'll make you believe in what-ifs. Have a look -
  1. Sherlock was an MI6 agent : It is believed, from various hints in the series, that Sherlock might've been an MI6 agent in the past under Mycroft, who is actually believed to be the head of the British secret services. There is also the mention of a third Holmes brother, which makes fans speculate some past mishap or death due to a specific mission, which probably strained the Mycroft-Sherlock relationship.
  2. Mary works for Moriarity : Mary's maiden name - Morstan is strikingly similar to Moran. It is a possibility that Moriarity planted her with John in order to destroy Sherlock, but Mary fell in love with John in the process. Dramatic, right?
  3. Andrew Scott is not the real Moriarity : Doyle's Moriarity is a character that stays in the shadows, which is a stark contrast to the Moriarity that Andrew Scott portrays. It is possible that the real Moriarity hired Scott, who is actually Richard Brook, an actor (as seen in the Reichenbach fall), to play the character of Moriarity, while the real antagonist works behind the mask.
  4. Sherlock's cases are all fake : This is one of the biggest theories which states that Mycroft is actually making up cases to keep his brother occupied and to keep him off drugs, because it is a known fact that Sherlock turns to drugs in his boredom. It is believed that John and Moriarity are both actors who have been hired by Mycroft to play the role of his brother’s companion and the super-villain of this whole drama, respectively. The way Sherlock easily gets his way, especially when he rescues Irene Adler from the bunch of terrorists is a clear evidence for this theory.
  5. Moriarity faked his own death just like Sherlock : It is quite possible that the rivals came to an agreement to challenge who could fake their death more convincingly. Moriarity blew his brains out, which perhaps startled Sherlock, who then jumped from the building in The Reichenbach fall to make his move.
  6. Sherlock was involved in Redbeard’s death : As seen in His last vow, Redbeard represents a strong emotional attachment in Sherlock’s life, which was again underlined in The Abominable Bride. Some fans believe that Sherlock is guilty of harming Redbeard, in probably one of his experiments as a child. And that it was Redbeard’s death which drove him away from any other emotional attachment in life.
Outrageous? Clever? Believable? Or simply crazy? Season four is right around the corner. And it is supposedly "darker" this time. With about thirty-six days to go, the wait is becoming increasingly hard. So in the meantime, why don’t you binge on to the last three seasons and dig into some behind the scene facts from the show -
  1. It all started with a speech : Mark Gatiss was approached to address the annual dinner in the Sherlock Holmes society at the houses of the British Parliament. At the same time, John Simpson had just returned from Kabul, and Gatiss touched him on the arm and whispered, “You’ve been in Afghanistan I perceive”. That’s how the start of the first episode was developed.
  2. Irene Adler’s nudity was not appreciated by fans : Doyle’s Adler is a woman of formidable honour, who would never allow herself to be Moriarity’s pawn or fall for Holmes after being naked for him. Steven Moffat, however, disagreed with such a view.
  3. Sherlock is perceived to be gay : Cumberbatch said in an interview that he has had people come up to him and thank him for representing asexuals. There is also a vast archive of Chinese Literature, where fans have portrayed Sherlock and Watson as a couple.
  4. Sherlock is not indeed gay : According to Moffat, there is no evidence of Sherlock being asexual in the series.
  5. Benedict Cumberbatch can hardly play the violin : Sherlock has a profound sense of music. However, Cumberbatch had to take Violin lessons, where he learnt to make just a sound, while playing live on set.
  6. Even the fonts in the show have a meaning : Typography design experts have noted that Sherlock’s on-screen graphics vary according to the occasion. Johnston Underground is the series’ custom-made title font. However, AF Generation Z is used, to show Sherlock deduction process and Irene Adler’s high-end Vertu phone uses the business-like Verdanda.
  7. Matt Smith wanted to play Watson : Matt Smith, the eleventh Doctor on the show Doctor Who auditioned for the role of Watson just one week before landing the role of the Doctor.
  8. Benedict Cumberbatch is not fond of the Sherlock hairstyle : Cumberbatch hates his hairstyle as Sherlock, which he thinks makes him look a bit like…a woman.
  9. Sherlock and Mrs Hudson know each other before they even started shooting together : Una Stubbs who plays Mrs Hudson knows Benedict Cumberbatch ever since he was four. She was his neighbour and lived right around the corner.
  10. Sherlock’s on screen parents are actually Benedict’s real parents : Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton who play Sherlock’s mum and dad on screen are in reality Benedict’s parents.
Cool, isn’t it? Let us know any more interesting facts that we might have missed, in the comments below, along with your predictions for season four.
Let the countdown being…
