Culture Charcha

Culture Charcha Rotaract Club of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia RID 3300 Batu Caves, complex limestone grottoes in Peninsular Malaysia. The caves are one of the Malaysia’s biggest tourist attractions and a place of pilgrimage for Tamil Hindus. They are named for the Sungai Batu (Batu River), which flows nearby, and are located 7 miles (13km) north of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.  The caves were little known except to local residents 1878, when the American naturalist William Hornaday revealed their existence to the wider world. K. Thamboosamy Pillai, a leader of the Tamil Hindu community in Malaya (as the region was then called), built a temple within the caves in 1891. It is said he took inspiration from the similarity in shape of the cave entrance to the tip of the “vel”, or spear, traditionally wielded by the deity Lord Murugan. Thaipusam, the Tamil Hindu festival devoted to Lord Murugan, was first celebrated on the site in 1892 and is now a major event tha

We are currently living in a world that is constantly changing. After the smartphone revolution, we have come closer to one another and our lives have been connected to each other’s to an extent that was once unimaginable. Our society revolves around a pivot. The pivot being social media. Going for a wedding? Don’t forget to upload photos on Facebook huh! Going on a Vacation? Keep your feed updated! Going to Starbucks? Put a story on Instagram! They might survive a day without food and water but an hour without their phones makes them uneasy.  But this addi

Worlds Collide

Image
Worlds Collide “The world is a book; those who do not travel read only a page.” Where does the world end? Some say it is the earth. Some say it is at the end of time-where you see tomorrow just over the horizon as today ebbs away. I say the earth is your world not everyone’s. Today is your world not everyone’s. Those before us have also experienced the world. Those further from us have also experienced the world. What we experienced is our world, not everyone’s. There are no boundaries just limits to imagination.  When you change something in your world, your butterfly effect changes parts of some others. Our world too is limitless. You just have to connect your world with everyone else’s. You have to work to expand it. You have to enter everyone’s world. The only people in your world are those whose worlds you unknowingly stumbled upon.   Every world is a blend of reality and wishful thinking. We try to shape our world how we think it should be. Up to some extent

A Spoonful of Spice

A Spoonful of Spice Italian Cuisine  “First we eat then we do everything else” I couldn’t agree more with this quote by M.F.K Fisher.  Food plays such a central part in our lives and when it comes to Italian food being one of the most popular and widely adopted cuisines all over the world. How many of us have dreamed of casting aside everyday life and running off to a villa in Tuscany to soak up perfect sun-dappled views while the wine flows and the pasta bowl never seems to empty? Unfortunately that dream is usually rudely interrupted by the alarm clock. While we may not be able to do much about the lack of gorgeous vistas, the true flavors of Italy can be brought to life anytime and anywhere. When you think “Italy,” of course you think “delicious food”. While this is an accurate thought, Italian cuisine is not just delicious, but distinguishes itself from the rest.  I consider that tasting a traditional food in a foreign country is one of the most pleasant wa

Seven Roads To Hell

Seven Roads To Hell  Antarctica  “Captain Hoover, the observation satellite has been showing some weird symbols 1.27 miles North West of our current location. It seems to be like a hut.” “A hut! Here? Who would want to live here of all places?” “I don’t know but the satellite has never been wrong before. It would be a good idea to check it out.” Captain Hoover; It felt nice to be called that. I had been assigned to this location two days ago. My promotion had been due for quite some time now. I felt no small amount of pride. It had last a full of 2 minutes before I was told that the location would be Antarctica. I needed to go and confirm the presence of the hut. I packed supplies for one week before setting off. The biting wind sliced my cheeks as I made my way towards the hut. After waking a mile or so, I could make out the silhouette of the thatched roof. There were footprints leading inside.so I called out, “Hello?” I didn’t really expect a response over all the

Newsflash  MOMO Challenge  The internet’s a weird place , there is always something to keep us interested. Right now the thing that has taken social media by storm is the momo challenge. You might’ve seen a picture of a girl with orb- like eyes , ringed with dark circles bulging from a pale face framed by stringy black hair and a creepy smile stretching across her face circulating on the internet. That’s Momo and she is the face of the viral internet game the Momo challenge.  The avatar of Momo has been adapted from the artistic works of the Japanese artist Midori Hayashi. The Momo challenge has been believed to be spreading across various social media platforms mainly WhatsApp. The game requires players to complete certain tasks that are usually dangerous and involve self- harm.  The viral game has caused panic and mass hysteria among parents and teachers. The Momo challenge is being called the Blue whale challenge 2.0 because of their eerily similar patterns. The
