Suicides or Murders?

The Vyapam Scam redefines the magnitude of the two most essential elements that validate today’s politics: Education and Money. At the surface, it is a simple admission and recruitment scam involving the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) popularly known as Vyapam.  But as the layers were uncovered, it was in fact something that broke the already cracked education system and bureaucracy.

Like most other scams, the Vyapam scam also was unearthed way after its inception and many bouts of execution. The very first traceable FIR registered in this matter was way back in 1995 in the district of Chattarpur in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Ever since, there were multiple cases of impersonation. But the case formally broke in 2013, when 20 impersonators were arrested after which, on 16th July 2013, the leader of this organized racket, Jagdish Sagar, was arrested. But that wasn’t the end.

The case took innumerable twists, each adding a new dimension to this mystery. Each arrest, each question leads to a higher authority and a more grave crime. There were 5 main exams that were rigged v.i.z., pre-post-graduation, food inspector selection test, milk federation test, Subedar sub-inspector test and police constable recruitment tests. The Vyapam officials would either make changes in the OMR sheets or provide photocopies of the answers to the candidates, for which they would get more than a lakh.

The special task force investigated and found important evidence that put the positions of various officials in danger and the opposition (congress) alleged that it was defending the chief minister( Shivraj Singh Chouhan) as there were documents where 64 mentions of the ‘CM’ were scrubbed out. The congress is grabbing every opportunity possible and the BJP is accusing it of “politicizing” the scam. An Aam Aadmi Party leader has alleged that the Centre has failed to value human life and supports corruption and atrocity and falsehood.

The political war aside, the most negatively intriguing part of this scam has been a recent development that caught everybody off guard. 46 had died, including the death of Madhya Pradesh governor, Ram Naresh Yadav’s son. All was in connection with the Vyapam Scam. The death of Namrata Damor, a medical student in connection with this scam, opened up a new facet in this mystery. Her family believed that it is murder taking into consideration the postmortem reports. But the postmortem result was later disowned by the head of a medico legal institute and was proclaimed a suicide. These multiple deaths have been blatantly denied any connection with the scam and have not been proven as murders but have been blamed to other causes like accidents and suicides.

The question that hovers in my mind is whether our system deserves any hope from the ones who will after all run it in the future or if our hopes shall remain shattered like the very system itself?
