Sensitivity Towards Deaf People

Sensitivity Towards Deaf People

Deafness or partial deafness is often looked upon as a defect or impairment by society and people tend to pity deaf people and treat them very differently. We shouldn’t separate them from us as “impaired” or “normal” instead we should interact with them more and in this process, make them feel like a regular person. However, we should pay attention to some important points on how to be more sensitive towards deaf or partially deaf people so that we don’t offend them unintentionally.

1. Deaf or Partially Deaf people are generally speech impaired as they do not listen to the pronunciations while having conversations, thus it is important to be sensitive towards speech defects of any person who is deaf or partially deaf.

2. Deaf or Partially Deaf people tend to misinterpret the communication made to them as they resort to lip reading while trying to understand the other person's communication. Thus superiors or friends and relatives should be sensitive to and not scold them or mock them for their mistakes, rather one should proactively ensure they have understood the message properly so that they do not feel embarrassed.

3. Deaf People generally tend to speak loudly as they feel others are not listening, we should be sensitive towards this and not presume that the person is being rude and unfriendly as they are speaking loudly.

4.  One should be very careful in speaking about famous songs or music or other such media amongst someone who has hearing impairments to make them feel deprived of such entertainment.

5. One should be sensitive in assisting deaf people to carpool and other assistance as the person might be suffering from commuting to their office or work on a daily basis as they are restricted to driving or walking on roads.

6. When in a group with a deaf person, it is imperative to have his needs get addressed first by putting ourselves in his position,  For e.g.

  1. While ordering food, instead of hearing the chef's recommendation, we should ask him to point out the Item description on the Menu Page.
  2. While watching TV programs together, always ensure to turn on the Subtitle.
  3. While Playing sports, use sign language with to communicate them for better participation.
