Surviving climate change

Surviving climate change

“We must regain the conviction that we need one and another, that we have the responsibility for one and the others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it” –Pope Francis.

Recently, there has been an increase in the levels of carbon dioxide emissions by human activities. This greenhouse gas is going to lead to the ever increasing global warming; there will be tipping points, rise in sea levels, extinctions and ocean acidification. We will not have clean drinking water in India by the year 2038, is what has been predicted by the scientists. Cities like Chennai and Hyderabad are already facing acute water crisis. Don’t like it? Well, it’s our future!

Adaptation, sustenance and survival seems to be the new motto of this generation but no one seems to care about preservation. We tend to forget that preservation of the environment is a way for survival of the humanity. All the schools, colleges and workshops are busy teaching us the problem with the environment but no one seems to care about finding a solution for the same. The issue is even if we do it’s a losing battle because only 20% of the world population even cares about saving the environment.  We are taught EVS almost every year yet it’s nothing but a boring subject that we can’t seem to shake off. It’s high time that the education system understands that the scope of EVS is much beyond it being a theoretical subject. “Just wishing about something doesn’t make it true, we have to work hard to make that wish a reality”; we have to tip the scales.

Just like the post about saving the world on social media won’t change anything, we are the ones who have to go out there and make a change. It’s not about planting a tree or diving into the ocean to clean it up, we can also reduce the use of the ACs we can’t seem to live without, try travelling in a bus for change and the next time your hand goes out of the window it shouldn’t be to throw the chewing gum wrapper.

Most pollution is caused by some 100 companies but a few like Pepsi are cutting back. There is a clean-up campaign being planned for Mt. Everest. 9 endangered species are thought to make a comeback. A national park is built in amazon to preserve the rainforest. If this keeps happening then maybe we might see a cleaner tomorrow but not without the support of the youth. We are the citizens of tomorrow and we have the power to make a change. If we collectively agree to use that power there really will be hope for a better tomorrow.

We don’t aim to spread awareness or knowledge because today’s youth seems to be aware of the problem. We are just trying to tell you to find a solution for it. We do not want to scare anybody; just to warn them. The future of this entire world depends upon us, we just have to take few minor steps to save it. I believe for a generation that stands up for what it firmly believes in and has the ability to inflict a change upon this world. A few steps to save this very earth is not much to ask, is it?
