5G- The New Era

5G

WHAT IS IT?

Every ten years or so, something big happens in mobile. Once a decade, a new generation of mobile network technology comes along. Back at the start of 2000, with 3G just about to launch, who could have predicted how the mobile world would look in 2010? 5G networks are the next generation of mobile internet connectivity, offering faster speeds and more reliable connections on smartphones and other devices than ever before. Average download speeds of around 1GBps expected to soon be the norm.

THE CHANGE

Whatever we do now with our smartphones we'll be able to do faster and better. Think of smart glasses featuring augmented reality, mobile virtual reality, much higher quality video, the internet of things making cities smarter. The fastest current 4G mobile networks offer about 45Mbps. 5G could achieve browsing and download speeds about 10 to 20 times faster in real-world. 5G connectivity was demoed in a situation where a surgery teaching was being performed in virtual reality along with haptic feedback. While the technology can help industries like healthcare, the technology paves way for real-time transfer of high-resolution data, like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. As robots are becoming smarter with the use of cutting-edge technologies like Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, 5G could play a pivotal role in their future evolution. An autonomous robot using 5G data from the cloud could balance itself when connection speeds are at the max. While 4G operates in the 900MHz band, 5G will operate in higher frequencies going all the way up to 28GHz. 5G networks are expected to launch across the world by 2020, working alongside existing 3G and 4G technology to provide speedier connections that stay online no matter where you are.

5G AND INDIA

Qualcomm said that India is going to be a “fast follower” of the fifth-generation (5G) technology, even as the country’s pan-Indian 4G LTE networks continue to see exponential data consumption due to falling data rates and rapid uptake of smartphones and 4G feature phones. When you can prove that the demand for data is there, it naturally drives to how do you manage it from a business perspective. If you have a big demand for data, you clearly need to drive the cost down so that you can compete. Basically, you need a bigger pipe, and that naturally leads to the implementation of 5G. 5G will also help accelerate the Indian government’s projects such as Digital India and Smart City.

We’re on the verge of a new age of interconnectedness, where the daily lives of people across the planet will be more closely intertwined than ever. Advances in technology will usher in the age of 5G telecommunications. And, if past is prologue, this technological evolution will lead to dramatic societal changes.
