Pride – The colours of equality
There is nothing wrong with you, there is a lot wrong with the world you live in-
Chris Colfer
Pride is showing your flying colours to the world with gratification, same goes with
the Pride movement it brings out the colours of various sexual orientation who
haven’t been given the gratification they deserve.
Pride stands up for getting identity to the LGBTQIA + community which means
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and + represents
many more.
What does LGBTQIA + mean?
A Lesbian is a homosexual woman in other words a woman who is sexually
attracted to other women.
A Gay is a homosexual man, that is a man who is sexually attracted to other men.
Bisexual is when a person is attracted to people from two or more genders.
Transgender is a term that describes people whose gender identity or expression
does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.
Queer is an umbrella term which means not getting attracted towards the
opposite sex but towards the same sex.
Intersex is when by birth a person’s sexual anatomy doesn’t fit any particular
gender. An asexual person is said to be the one who is not sexually attracted to
anyone
How it all began?
June 28, 1970, marked the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots with the march,
which was the first Gay Pride march in history, and covered the 51 blocks to Central Park.It was the birthplace of the massive movement which never saw a standstill there after.
Instead of arresting culprits involved in serious convictions and violations of law,
the police were far more interested in arresting people that looked or behaved like
homosexuals. First of all, morally and humanly wrong. Secondly, they didn’t have
any proof that the person they were arresting was, in fact, homosexual.
Rise of the Movement:
These riots caused a rage in the community which led to a number of protests and
pride parades.Thom Higgins, a gay rights activist, first coined the term ‘gay pride’
to give an official name to the protest they had been holding. In 1970, it gained
momentum and soon, similar parades and protests were held in different
countries throughout the world. The parades usually take place in June, because it
is celebrated as the Pride Month. Where people from the community organize parades and instill the principle of acceptance in others. They prove to the world that there should not be any barriers to gender, it should be a liberal concept.
Why massive marches?
The pride marches stand for legal rights like gay marriages and acceptance in the
society. As found out over the years, law wasn’t the only problem. The disappointing stares from society were another issue. Thus, now even the people who are not part of the community themselves, called ‘allies’, join protests to support their friends,
family members, and basic human rights. They march for removing workplace
discrimination. They march for the lives of transgender women of color, who are
being murdered at an alarming rate.
Therefore, “The only choice I made was to be myself”, because there is nothing
better than accepting yourself before others do!
