Night Changes..

Smack! Kick! "Move bitch. It's time for you to get some beauty sleep. No one needs to see you sick and grumpy the day after our wedding."             Our bloody wedding Guess who was lucky enough to get married at 14? That's right... It was me! Married at fourteen with a twenty one year old monstrous politician. My life, it did a whooping somersault. It's weird how fast the night changes. Yesterday, I was playing in the school playground, with the school claiming me with its uniform and ID card. But today? I sit in my own pool of blood with nothing but a mangalsutra claiming me his... in no way as his wife but his slave. He nipped his seventeen cigarette on my butt and got up to pick up his pants while I sat with unbearable pain and agony with fresh cuts, burns and wounds on my face and places where I don't let anyone touch.          Those sensitive places P...

The White Frock and the Broken Doll

“I think this is the last stop, mate.” Someone tapped on my shoulders. I could not feel my legs. I stumbled and fell in the compartment; he tried to pick me up.  “Get your hands off me.” I glared at him.   “You are too drunk. Where are you going?” I did not listen. I just tiptoed around the compartment and got off the train. Something was eating me from inside, slowly poisoning every part of me that ever felt alive. I was dragging my feet on the roads. I could hear vehicles honking, drivers shouting, and the madness that this city is.  Crawling, I made my way to the graveyard while tightly holding a white frock and a broken doll to my chest. It was almost midnight. Leafs were ruffling with breeze and there was no sign of any living being. I opened the gate, tearing through the silence of the night. I slowly started walking towards her. She was beautiful too, just like this frock. She was so precious…my sister, Ilina. She had big eyes ...

The Horror Book List

Image
The Shining by Stephen King The movie version of  The Shining  is a pop culture touchstone — but as usual, the book is even better than the movie. There's a reason King is considered a horror master: The tense atmosphere and freaky supernatural occurrences get into the reader's head and make you begin to doubt your own grip on sanity, along with that of the characters. Most people are probably familiar with the premise of the book: An alcoholic father takes a job as the off-season caretaker of an isolated mountain resort, in order to work on his writing and become closer to his family. The son is a psychic, a "shiner", who can see the haunting in the hotel. Sure the book is chock full of supernatural visions — but equally disturbing is the human-on-human violence. The child's-eye view of his parents' deteriorating relationship — and sanity — is meant to dredge up uncomfortable memories of childhood's confusion and powerlessness. 2. Haunted:...

The Terrace: Guest Post

Image
I'm not a firm believer in ghosts and spirits, as such, but during the wee hours of the night when I have to sleep, it's ALL I can think about, and, it scares me. My best friend believes in everything related with the supernatural, and she's had many stories to tell us about the kind of eerie things happening in her life. Last year, for my birthday the four of us were up at my terrace late in the evening. We were just watching some movies and eating, when all of a sudden she wanted to leave and go back downstairs. Under no circumstances was I packing up and leaving to go down when it was so nice up there. She swore she saw some strange whitish figure in the adjoining terrace at least three times, swooshing past our side of the terrace, she was terrified. Obviously we didn't leave until we were done, also as we went down, nothing happened. I still go up to my terrace for listening to music and to relax for a while, but now, even though I kno...

The Camping Trip

Image
As young boys we were all very fascinated by the creepy ghost stories. Every camping trip from our school had this one occasion when some guy would narrate us a ghost story or some other scary incident which he either recalled or made up. We would all huddle around him and listen to him carefully, trying to soak in the supernatural aura created by the story. It was all in good humor, only, not on that night. The night was rife and we were all set for a story. Our bus was about to leave in the next hour on our our journey back home. We had early dinners during our camping trips and hence we were all stuffed. We all huddled up in a small tent and a torch was passed on to the guy who was going to narrate the incident. He began his story, ironically in the way all fairytales begin.  " Once upon a time, there was a small village of poor farmers. They were harassed by the local landlord for money. The landlord used his influence and muscle power to acquire more land. H...

Darkness

Image
'Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering,  fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before!'   - Edgar Allan Poe. Which is the foremost thought darkness evokes in your mind?- Fear? Batman?  Nothingness? Emptiness? Vampires? Ghosts? Werewolves? Dracula? It is self- evident that darkness has always been associated with all the negative things in the world. As a kid, I never used to enter a dark room alone, not because I was afraid, but because of the never ending void it created within me. But as I grew, I equated darkness with fear. I'm quite sure most of us have a similar story to tell. But there is a lot more to this never-ending expanse of nothingness.            There is an age-old saying which goes ' the night is darkest before dawn'. It is in these dark times that a person encounters his innermost fears and desires as well! The void that darkness creates inside us makes ...
